Charge codes

What are charge codes?

The buckets hours are recorded against, and the two main kinds.

A charge code is the bucket hours are recorded against. Instead of just logging "8 hours," a member logs "8 hours to Acme Migration" so the time is attributed to the right work.

Direct vs. indirect

BadgeOut distinguishes two kinds of charge codes:

  • Direct: time tied to a specific client project or deliverable.
  • Indirect: overhead time that isn't billed to a single project, such as internal meetings, training, or administration.

The distinction matters for reporting and, for some organizations, compliance. You mark each code as direct or indirect when you create it, and it shows with a small badge wherever it appears.

Who can use a code

Members can only log to codes you've assigned them. If someone says a code they expect is missing, either it isn't assigned to them yet or its assignment window hasn't started, both of which are yours to set.

To create direct codes and scope them to a contract period, see Charge codes in a contract period. To assign members with their hours and rate, see Assigning members.
